Diamond Appreciation
The word “diamond” is derived from the Greek term “adamas”, meaning hard and untamed. Called the “king of gemstones”, diamonds are recognized as the world’s most precious gems, and are one of the most popular types of gemstone.
Diamond Appreciation
The only chemical ingredient of diamonds is carbon, making it the only gemstone made of a single element, and belongs to an equiaxed system. It often contains 0.05%-0.2% impurities, the most important of which are N and B. Their presence determines the classification and properties of the diamond. The crystal forms of diamonds are primarily octahedrons, rhombohedral dodecahedrons, tetrahedrons, and their polymorphic derivatives. Pure diamonds are colorless and transparent; different colors appear due to the presence of trace elements. As the saying goes, “Gold is valuable, diamonds are priceless.” Diamonds are regarded as invaluable treasures, but the value of diamonds can be determined through diamond classification methodology, often referred to as “4C”, which are the carats, color, clarity, and cut of the diamond.
4C Diamond Classification

As the saying goes, “Gold is valuable, diamonds are priceless.” Diamonds are regarded as invaluable treasures, but the value of diamonds can be determined through diamond classification methodology, often referred to as “4C”.

Carat
Carat

The most important and simplest element in the diamond 4C quality classification system, which is based on direct weighing, is the weight of the diamond in carats. 1 carat = 200 mg = 0.2 g; one carat is divided into hundredths, each of which is called a point. Where other conditions remain the same, as the weight of the diamond increases, its value increases geometrically.

Color
Color

Diamonds come in a variety of natural colors, from the highly valuable colorless to the rare light blue to pink to the more common yellow hue. The more transparent and colorless, the more easily light penetrates, and the more colorful the light’s refraction and dispersion. Diamond color grading is determined by technicians in a grading environment in a professional laboratory who repeatedly compare the diamond to be graded with standard-color stones. Colorless diamonds are rated D (meaning that the closer the color, the diamond’s color rating to pure, colorless rating of D, the first letter of “diamond”, the better its quality). Diamond color evaluation and classification is based on internationally established standards from D (high-quality colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown) in alphabetical order in 23 grades.

Clarity
Clarity

Diamond crystals form deep in the Earth’s magma. The formation environment is complex, composition is diverse, and the temperature and pressure are extremely high. After hundreds of millions of years of geological changes, it is inevitable that diamonds will contain various impurities or flaws. These are the natural imprints of diamond formation, just like people's fingerprints, and they make each diamond individual and unique. The characteristics of each diamond are different, and appraisers evaluate the clarity level of diamonds based on factors such as the location, size, number, and contrast of the diamond’s features. The fewer the number, smaller, and more colorless the inclusions in a diamond, the higher the clarity rating of the diamond, and in turn, the more precious the diamond becomes.

Cut
Cut

The evaluation of diamond cut is based on the diamond cutting ratio, polish, and symmetry. A good cut should reflect the brightness and fire of the diamond as much as possible while retaining the weight of the original stone. The cutting of diamonds is the most important element in the 4C standard, and it is the only one that can be improved by technicians. Therefore, diamond cutting can also be said to be the “second life” of diamonds. This standard of this handicraft depends on the talent and experience of the diamond cutter.

Care of diamonds and diamond jewelry

Although the chemical properties of diamonds are extremely stable, they can absorb oils and fats. Contact with things like cosmetics and skin oil can reduce their brightness. Therefore, they should be cleaned once a month.

Although the chemical properties of diamonds are extremely stable, they can absorb oils and fats. Contact with things like cosmetics and skin oil can reduce their brightness. Therefore, they should be cleaned once a month to maintain their luster. The easiest way to clean diamonds is to add the proper amount of cleaning agent to a small dish filled with warm water, immerse the diamond or diamond jewelry, gently scrub with a small brush, then rinse with warm water, and finally wipe with a dry cloth to absorb the water.

02

The PT ring will rub against other objects while being worn, and will change as a result after long periods of time, but as long as it does not come into contact with hard objects, these changes will not be obvious. The ring should not come into contact with hard object (the platinum portion), and contact with oil should be avoided for the diamond. Once a week, soak the ring in a warm water solution containing detergent for 20-30 minutes, then rinse clean with water.

03

The hardness of diamonds is 10 on the Mohs scale, making them the hardest and most wear-resistant material in the world. Therefore, you should not stack diamond jewelry and other jewelry together to avoid scratching the other jewelry. You should also not stack several diamond jewelry pieces together in one place to prevent them from damaging each other.

04

Although diamonds are hard and wear-resistant, if struck with force, they can shatter. Therefore, you should not wear diamond jewelry while exercising or doing heavy labor. Because the diamonds are lipophilic, you should also not wear diamond jewelry in the kitchen or while bathing to avoid staining.

05

Diamonds are expensive. While wearing, you should always check whether the diamond jewelry setting is worn or loose. If you discover any problems, you should promptly bring it to the jewelry store for inspection and repair.
